Centella asiatica extract, a member of the parsley family, has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine) to heal skin conditions such as psoriasis, combat mental fatigue, and treat asthma, fever and gastric ulcers. Modern research shows that Gotu Kola provides support for a healthy memory function. A study conducted in 1992 by K. Nalini at Kasturba Medical College showed an impressive improvement in memory in mice treated with the extract (taken orally) daily for 14 days before the experiment. The maintenance of learned behavior in gotu kola-treated mice was up to three to 60 times better than control animals. Preliminary results in a clinical trial with intellectually delayed children showed an increase in scores on intelligence tests (Bagchi, 1989). This does not mean that Gotu Kola will improve intelligence for all children, especially those who are normal. According to pharmacological research, one result of Gotu Kola’s complex actions is a balancing effect on cells and tissues involved in the healing process, especially connective tissue. One of its components, asiaticoside, has the effect of stimulating skin regeneration and enhancing skin, hair, nails and connective tissue (Kartnig, 1988).
